Allergic Rhinitis

Allergic rhinitis is perhaps more commonly thought of as hay fever. It is, however, any reaction to an allergen - a substance which adversely affects the skin, nose, sinuses and lungs or which causes breathing difficulties.

Such reactions may include asthma, eczema and migraine.

Symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis

Brought on by contact with air containing allergens, the usual symptoms include persistent sneezing accompanied by either a stuffy or runny nose. The eyes can become watery and very itchy, as can the nose and throat.

People who suffer a more extreme reaction find that bright lights hurt their eyes and they become irritable. They may have difficulty sleeping and suffer from a lack of energy.

A chronic cough can develop along with sinus problems, which may lead to pain and discomfort in the face. There may also be some hearing difficulties due to pressure building in the ears.

Skin infections are possible, and in some instances dark circles or patches may form under the eyes of a sufferer due to reaction.

Treatment of Allergic Rhinitis

If you think you are suffering from an allergy, you should avoid further contact with the allergen and take antihistamines to relieve the symptoms. In extreme cases you should contact your GP.
