Introduction
Many people suffer allergic reactions to animals, the most common of which is to cats. One popular misconception is that it is the fur which causes the reaction, when in fact it is either dried saliva left on the fur after grooming or dead skin cells (dander) which shed from the cat. It is also caused by the larvae in the blood.
Symptoms Of Animal Allergies
Sensitivity to these allergens may produce:
breathing difficulties including wheezing
watering and/or itchy eyes
stuffy or runny nose
excessive sneezing, perhaps triggering an asthmatic attack
developing itchy rash on body parts
anaphylactic shock (in rare cases)
Causes Of Animal Allergies
Susceptibility to allergies may be inherited and often arise in conjunction with exposure to certain substances (allergens) in the environment.
Treatment for Animal AllergiesAs well as avoiding contact with the offending animals and banishing them from bedrooms, pets should be treated by a vet. Taking antihistamines can help to reduce symptoms. Steam cleaning of carpets and lounge furniture is helpful. If the affected individual is prone to reactions, the GP should be contacted for advice about Anapen. In all severe cases, medical advice should be sought.
