Dyspraxia is the name used to describe a brain immaturity that mostly affects males, and which manifests as some of the conditions listed below:
Clumsiness
Poor posture
Slowness to learn and dress or feed themselves
Speech problems
Phobias or obsessive behaviour
Difficulties throwing or catching a ball
Dyspraxic children can have average or above-average intelligence but often behave immaturely. They find it hard to 'fit in' with their peers and may throw tantrums when at home.
The child will recognise a comb, but will not be able to use it appropriately, offer him a sweater with one sleeve pulled inside out, and he will not be able to correct it. He will have difficulty in assembling objects, drawing, and coping with the many skills that most children take for granted.
This condition can be present in any age group from 3 years. It can be improved with psychological support for parents who are advised and taught to look for telltale signs.
