Breathing Problems Caution for the Elderly
Older people are more likely to suffer from respiratory problems due to an incapacity to fight infection, as a result of physiological deterioration and long-term exposure to various damaging substances.
Exposure to substances can be self-inflicted e.g. cigarettes or occupational as in coal dust or asbestos. Young people are also susceptible to lung diseases as a result of exposure to harmful substances, and the longer the exposure the greater the risk.
Prevention is better than cure in this case, but if occupationally-related, then appropriate protective measures should be taken. Early detection is an important factor in successful treatment.
Heart problems such as congestive heart failure and angina can produce breathing difficulties. Where current treatment is not controlling the symptoms, referral will be necessary. Uncontrolled COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease where smoking-related will also cause breathing problems.
Breathing Problem Advice
Getting out of breath during exertion and sometimes when emotionally upset, is perfectly normal, though overall it is important to eat and drink sensibly, exercise regularly and not to smoke to maintain a healthy heart, clear lungs and good circulation.
Those who suffer from anaemia tend to feel tired and may get out of breath quickly, although there are different causes for anaemia, and something like simple iron deficiency would need a doctor's attention.
People who are very overweight or obese may get out of breath when performing everyday functions that for many might be considered to be non-strenuous. Obviously, starting a weight reduction programme is the best form of treatment in these cases.
We may all suffer from breathing problems as a result of coughs, colds and flu, and often the only form of treatment is to bide our time, rest and keep warm. Some colds and flu remedies are available that help open up the airways and alleviate the symptoms. Sometimes, a simple steam inhalation containing a little menthol can work wonders for this purpose.
Smoking not only causes lung problems, but also contributes to coronary heart disease. Stopping smoking is vital for maintaining a healthy set of lungs and for promoting an overall better quality of life.
