What is Regaine®?
Regaine® is the only over-the-counter treatment in the UK that has been clinically proven to help prevent further hereditary hair loss, showing success in 4 out of 5 men. For some people it even reverses the process, resulting in regrowth. The solution, containing the active ingredient Minoxidil, should be applied to the scalp twice a day to help kick start your follicles.
What is Minoxidil?
Minoxidil, the active ingredient in Regaine®, has been extensively researched and tested for its effectiveness in treating hereditary hair loss. Scientists believe it works by helping the blood flow to the hair follicle, stimulating and prolonging hair growth. It has been shown to help prevent further hair loss in 4 out of 5 men and help stimulate regrowth for a thicker, fuller head of hair.

What does 'Clinically Proven' mean?
Pharmaceutical products undergo extensive clinical trials before reaching the market. These trials establish the effectiveness and safety of the product and are closely controlled to ensure the results are valid.
In clinical trials, Regaine® was shown to help prevent further hair loss in 4 out of 5 men. Regaine® Extra Strength produced regrowth in 3 out of 5 men in 48 weeks, with some seeing results in as little as 2 months.
How it works:
Regaine® works by increasing the supply of blood and nutrients to your hair follicles, helping to strengthen existing hair and stimulate secondary growth. This process produces thicker, longer, more-visible hair.
It contains the active ingredient Minoxidil which has been shown to help prevent further hair loss in 4 out of 5 men and stimulate regrowth without affecting male hormones. Because it has limited side effects and has a good safety record, you can buy Regaine® without needing a prescription.
When will I see results?
Regaine® won't turn you into a long haired love god overnight. It's not magic. The speed of results depends on various factors, including which product you're using.
Regaine® Extra Strength tends to work more quickly, in some cases making a difference in as little as 8 weeks. However, it can take anywhere between 2 and 4 months, with best results after a year.
Regaine® Regular Strength can produce results in about 16 weeks, but again, the effect may continue to improve with the best results showing up to 12 months into treatment. Because everyone is different, it's impossible to give a definitive answer. Just be patient and give it time to work.
What causes hair loss?
The most common cause of hair loss in men and women is androgenetic alopecia (AGA). Heredity, hormones and age all play a part in this condition. In AGA the genes and hormones in your body have a shrinking effect on your hair follicles, making them ineffective at growing new hairs.
How does Regaine® work?
Regaine® contains the active ingredient Minoxidil. It works by increasing the supply of blood and nutrients to the hair follicles, strengthening existing hair and stimulating secondary growth. This produces thicker, longer, more-visible hair. Regaine® achieves these results without affecting male hormones.
How soon will it start to work?
Unfortunately, there's no hard and fast answer. Clinical studies have shown that if there is a response to the use of Regaine® Regular Strength, regrowth can occur as early as 16 weeks. If you use Regaine® Extra Strength, you may start to see results within 8 weeks. But remember that everyone is different so you just need to be patient.
When you start using Regaine®, you may notice a temporary increase in hair loss in the first 2-6 weeks. This is entirely normal and is good news – it shows that your hair is shifting from a dormant phase to an active growing phase.
Will Regaine® work for everybody?
No, there are several factors that may influence the effects of Regaine®, including:
- The predominance of hereditary hair loss in your family
- The length of time you have been losing your hair
- The specific type of hair loss condition you have
- The area of hair loss on your scalp
However, Regaine® is proven to stabilise hair loss in 4 out of 5 men and over 5 million users worldwide can't be wrong!
About Regaine® for Women:
Although thinning hair can be brought on by many different causes, more than 1 in 4 women find their condition is due to androgenetic alopecia (hereditary hair loss). Regaine for Women is the first treatment that can be applied direct to the scalp, which is clinically proven to effectively treat women’s thinning hair.
Extensive clinical trials have shown that Regaine for Women can stop further hair loss in 4 out of 5 women, and it can start regrowing some hair in 3 out of 5 women in 32 weeks. So if you're experiencing thinning hair, Regaine for Women could be the answer.
How to use Regaine® for Women:
Regaine for Women is easy to use but for the best results, it is important to apply it correctly and make it part of your daily routine. You need to apply it once in the morning and once in the evening about half an hour before you go to bed.
Applying Regaine® for Women:
- Leave your hair and scalp to dry naturally
- When dry, use a comb to part your hair where it is thinning
- Using your preferred applicator, apply a single 1ml dose to the scalp where your hair is thinning
- Massage it lightly into the affected area and leave the solution to dry
- Comb and style your hair as normal
- Remember to wash your hands afterwards
You need to apply Regaine for Women twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening, leaving roughly 12 hours between applications. It’s best to do it about half an hour before going to bed to give it time to dry properly.
While you’re still getting used to using Regaine for Women, please be sure to follow the instructions every time.
Regaine® vs thickening shampoos:
When it comes to making thin hair thicker, there are thickening shampoos which make your hair appear to be thicker; and then there is Regaine for Women, which actually makes the structure of each hair strand thicker.
All shampoos are made to clean the hair and by doing so, each hair shaft is prevented from sticking together. That means they have that little bit more space in between, making hair look fuller. On top of this, some thickening shampoos also contain amino acids which thicken the hair; proteins which help keep the hair shafts apart; and chemicals called polyvinylpyrrolidones (PVPs) which coat the shafts. All this adds up to making each strand of hair thicker than normal.
